Bear Trust conducted its first “teach the teachers” workshop in Alaska during November, 2011.
Along with lots of help from our Alaskan collaborators (Alaska Wildlife Conservation Center, Alaska Department of Fish and Game, University of Alaska Anchorage), we used content from the Curriculum Guide to The Bear Book to create professional development opportunities for teachers who participated in our PILOT STUDY in Alaska. As part of this continuing education course, teachers attended a “teach the teachers” workshop, conducted at Alaska Wildlife Conservation Center in Portage, AK.
These teachers are now implementing the lessons from Curriculum Guide to The Bear Book into their classrooms.
Lessons in the Curriculum Guide to The Bear Book target high school learners, address STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math; a US campaign to help our students become more competitive in science and math) goals, and meet National Science Standards.
When we release the The Bear Book Volume II and corresponding Curriculum Guide, we plan to conduct at least 10 “teach the teachers” workshops around the country as we pilot this program. Stay tuned!
